Powerful Memories
Weekly ArticleAndy didn't know his visit with his grandparents would be so electrifying. After dinner they all sat together in the living room and watched as a thundering spring storm rolled across the countryside. It was not long before lightning took out the power.

As the three sat in the dark, interrupted by the occasional flash of lightning, Andy shared his concern about the darkness. It was clear he was scared and needed light - right now! Andy was too young to remember the last power outage so he had no idea what would happen next. After Grandpa broke out the flashlights, Andy was comforted. Andy was so used to electricity, he never imagined a simple flashlight could light the room.

When Andy drifted to sleep on the couch, the grandparents talked about Andy's experience with the darkness. They could easily relate, because they too had a recent unexpected experience. The economy had taken a sudden toll on their savings and they would not be able to make cash gifts to their favorite organizations this year. But that did not mean they were left in the dark.

Just as the flashlight provided a worthy alternative to electricity, Andy's grandparents found a simple new way to give. They chose to include a gift to their favorite charity in their wills. A gift in their will allowed them to make a good-sized gift that they would not have been able to make this year or any other year while both were alive.

Just as the storm eventually passed, they knew they would continue giving a cash gift each year. However, they also knew that no matter what, they would someday make a generous gift in their wills.
